In non-dual Tantra the physical body is understood
to be a sacred vehicle for the realization of our Primordial
state of Awareness, our enlightened Nature.
Training in the Way of Adi-Yoga, one learns the secrets
of the body, breath and energy called kundalini shakti
for the purpose of self-realization.
Adi-Yoga is Hatha Yoga as it was originally developed
and transmitted by the sages of India for the purpose
of enlightenment. A quote from the seminal text of the
Hatha Yoga tradition illustrates this point:
“Salutations to the glorious original
guru, Sri Adinatha, who transmitted the knowledge of
Hatha Yoga which shines forth as a stairway for those
who wish to ascend to the highest stage of yoga, the
yoga of kings (realization of one’s enlightened
Nature).”
-Hatha Yoga Pradipika
ch.1, v.1
Adi in Sanskrit means “original,
primordial, uncreated”, and Yoga means “oneness,
union”. Here the word “yoga” is used
as a noun describing a state rather than the usual use
of it as a verb describing a process. Therefore, the
term Adi-Yoga refers to our original, uncreated state
of perfect oneness. Practicing Adi-Yoga, one returns
to that primordially inherent state of oneness free
of confused suffering.
The modern yoga movement lost its original intent as
well as most of its methods when it was packaged for
commercial export to the west. This is why yoga is now
mixed with dance and other exercise systems and the
asana or posture aspect of hatha yoga is what is primarily
taught in yoga studios today.
Commercial mainstream Yoga bears no resemblance to
the Yoga of the Mahasiddhas (great enlightened masters
of Tantra).
Adi-Yoga training is traditional and comprehensive.
It retains the original intent and methods of the practice
as a means to enlightenment and affords the student
access to the unbroken, undiluted transmission of the
Mahasiddhas.
If you have been looking for the original Hatha Yoga
tradition and you’ve felt that yoga is more than
exercise or trance dancing, you will enjoy studying
Adi-Yoga.
Training in Adi-Yoga is occurs in stages and covers
these areas in depth:
- Asana - Yoga postures
- Pranayama - breath/energy exercises
- Bandha - physico-energetic “locks”
- Mudra - bodily gestures to re-channel
energy of consciousness
- Marma - the vital points of the
body’s energy system
- Cakra - vorteces of subtle energy
- Nadi - the energy channels
- Kriya - directing energy, breath,
mantra and visualizations through the nadis
- Meditation - both with-form and
without-form
- Chanting - prayers and mantras
specific to the yoga tradition
- Diet & Lifestyle Guidelines
- which need adjusting through the various stages
- Precepts of Conduct - which form
the context for the integrating our true Nature as
discovered through the practice
It should once again be emphasized that although asana
is taught in an exacting and at times rigorous fashion
in Adi-Yoga training, it is merely the foundation, as
can be seen from the list above.
